Back and Pelvic Control

After back surgery, one of the most important things to rebuild is awareness of your back and pelvis position — it is not about avoiding movement forever, but learning to move with control again.
Good back and pelvic control helps you feel more confident during rehab exercises and everyday movements like bending, sitting and standing.

Walking and Gentle Movement

Gentle marching with the belt — rebuilding confidence and movement steadily while keeping the back controlled.

Walking is often one of the first and most important parts of recovery — it rebuilds confidence, circulation, mobility and fitness without placing too much load on the spine.

The key is to build it up steadily. A good plan includes a clear walking or gentle movement progression matched to your stage of recovery.

Core Control and Endurance

After discectomy surgery, core training should not mean aggressive sit-ups. The goal is to rebuild control and endurance in the muscles that support the spine.
This means learning to gently brace, breathe properly and keep the back steady during simple movements — starting at the right level and progressing as symptoms allow.

Hip and Glute Strength

A glute bridge with the belt — feedback keeps the pelvis level so the glutes do the work and the lower back is protected.

The hips and glutes play a major role in protecting the lower back. If the glutes are weak, the lower back often does more work than it should during walking, stairs, bending and lifting.

A good plan includes glute and hip exercises introduced gradually and performed with excellent back control.

Mobility and Nerve Sensitivity

After back surgery, some people still feel stiffness, tightness or nerve sensitivity into the leg. Mobility work can restore confidence and movement — but it should be gentle and appropriate.

The aim is not to force stretches or push into nerve pain. It is to gradually improve movement while keeping symptoms calm.

Return to Lifting and Whole-Body Movement

Rehab should eventually prepare you for real life. It is not enough to only do exercises on a mat — you need to rebuild the ability to squat, hinge, lift, carry and climb stairs with confidence.

This stage needs to be progressive. Many people either avoid these movements out of fear, or return too quickly without enough control.

Exercise Technique and Feedback

Red means you have slipped out of position; green means your back is controlled — instant feedback on your technique.

After back surgery, technique matters. It is not enough to simply complete the exercises — poor technique can reduce the benefit or place unnecessary stress on your back.

This is especially important as you progress into harder movements like bridges, hinges, squats, lunges and Pilates. Feedback tells you when your back position is good.
